- Nelson Mandela: The Freedom Fighter
The world honours Nelson Mandela, the first Black president of South Africa, for his contribution to the overthrow of the apartheid regime, which institutionalised racial inequality. Nelson Mandela, who was born in a small hamlet in 1918, went on to become a lawyer and an activist against the racist apartheid government. He supported a democratic South Africa with several racial groups and co-founded the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League.
Mandela endured severe circumstances and isolation throughout his 27-year jail sentence for his anti-apartheid actions. Still, his spirit was unbroken… Mandela’s jail cell served as a catalyst for the global anti-apartheid movements and a symbol of struggle against injustice. After being freed in 1990, he spearheaded talks that saw apartheid fall and democratic elections take place in South Africa.
Mandela was the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994. He offered a strong example of leadership in the face of misfortune by encouraging forgiveness, togetherness, and reconciliation rather than pursuing retribution.
